Try to not ask questions unless you're genuinely curious. Try to not praise unless you're genuinely impressed. Try to not boss him around. When your agenda conflicts with hers, try to understand when she behaves as if there is a conflict.

Helping children grieve

As a nanny I have cared for three children who have lost a parent to death. I searched for answers on how to help these children long-term and came up short. The questions I set out to answer were:

-How does this significant death affect a child years later?

-How can I help the child?

-What is important to know about child grieving in order to support the child?

I found several great resources at my local library including a book I read cover to cover called Children and Grief: When a Parent Dies by J. William Worden. This book is mainly the conclusions of a Child Bereavement Study conducted by Dr. Phyllis Silverman and the author studying children between ages 6 and 17 who lost a parent to death. The study followed the children for 2 years after the death and compared them to a non-bereaved sample of children. Each chapter ends with a bulleted summary.

Presenting Nanny Marcia

Each month you will get a change to meet one of the many nannies that are part of The Nanny Alliance of Wisconsin. Today you get to meet the new director, Marcia Hall.

Why did you become a nanny and how long have you been one?

a. I have always loved working with children. My parents were both teachers and from an early age babysat children in my neighborhood. When I was a junior in high school I considered becoming a teacher like my parents but wanted to instruct in smaller groups. I loved the idea of being a nanny and found the English Nanny and Governess School. In 1996 I attended and graduated. I have been a Certified Professional Nanny ever since.

What is your current nanny position like?

a. I care for a 5 year old girl in preschool 3 mornings a week and a 9 year old boy in school full time. They live in Mequon and I am blessed to be able to take my 3 year old daughter to work with me. The children love to play outside, do art projects and go on “field trips” to the zoo and museums. The 5 year old loves all things “stuffed” and the 9 year old loves all things Legos.

Why do you enjoy what you do?

a. I love being a nanny because I am able to shape the way children are raised. All of the families I have worked with have been very unique. I am not only able to help families find the best parenting approach for their family but I am able to help them implement those techniques. I love being able to do that.

What is one of your most memorable moments as a nanny?

a. On Sept 11, 2001 I was working for a family of 3 boys in Whitefish Bay, WI. Mom and dad were on a trip in Canada when the tragic events happened. Of course we all know that the events of that day meant that mom and dad would not be able to return home for some time. That week will always be a bittersweet memory for me. I was able to help the children through understanding the tragedy but also give mom and dad piece of mind that their children were in good hands. I really believe that by experiencing and working through that event my relationship and bond with those children and their parents that will last forever.

What is your favorite activity or place to go with your charges?

a. We love to go all over the place but I think my favorite thing to do with them is crafts in the home. Their excitement is so great and I love watching their little faces light up when they are proud of the work of art they have completed.

What is one way you would like to grow as a nanny or what is one thing you would like to learn more about for your nanny career?

a. I would really like to understand more about autism, ADD and ADHD and how to help children and families deal with these issues. These are issues that face a lot of children today and parents have a very hard time dealing with.

Nature workshop for educators of young children

Documenting Children's Learning Outdoors and Den Building
Join us for a unique one-day workshop at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Preschool designed to help Early Childhood Educators engage children in learning in outdoor areas. Claire Warden, an educational consultant from Scotland and the author of The Potential of a Puddle, Nurture though Nature, and Nature Kindergartens, will be presenting the workshop. We will begin with a tour of the SANC Preschool and then hike outdoors, followed by refreshments and a book signing. Please dress for the weather.

Claire Warden is an educational consultant who has developed a unique approach to experimental learning. She founded Mindstretchers in 1996, a company that includes a project approach called, "The Living Classroom," which explores senatorial and experimental learning in outdoor spaces. How to teach children responsibility

Kids are adverse to responsibility as north is to the south pole. They have learned from an early age that others will take care of them, feed them, bathe them, dress them. It is no big shock that responsibility is something we have to teach them because they are not born with it. So we must train and coach them in this arena.

It doesn’t help matters that responsibilities are normally B-O-R-I-N-G!! And we know that kids love to do exciting things. Cleaning their room or doing dishes are not stimulating for them, period. You could get creative in these activities and try to make them more interesting, however visions of broken dishes and clothes hanging from the ceiling fan do come to mind!

Welcome to the New Nanny Alliance!!

Happy New Year, nanny friends! I hope you find the snow a welcome treat for the New Year. I, for one, am glad that we don’t have more yet, though I am sure it is coming soon.

As promised I am writing today to let you all know of the exciting future of what was once Northshore Professional Nanny Alliance.

1. The first change you all know about already. With the closing of Northshore Professional Nanny Agency, our group is no longer attached to an agency. We are independent and therefore decided to change our name. We will now be known as The Nanny Alliance of Wisconsin (The Alliance). We believe that with this new change we will be able to better represent ALL the nannies that we want to include.

2. I have scheduled 6 days of education throughout the year and we will have many social events added to the calendar as the year proceeds. I hope to get the educational events in the same place, but I am still working on a location. The first educational event will be January 28^th at Ruby G's near the Marquette Campus. The complete current list for the year is to the right. All regular educational event days will be on Saturday mornings from 10:00AM-12PM. For those interested in some Alliance Business stuff please be there promptly at 10. The education part of the day will start promptly at 10:30. These standard educational days will cost $5.

3. Because we are no longer going to be connected to a business we need to have a small amount of money on hand for printing costs and other small essentials. So membership dues will be reinstituted. To be a member of The Nanny Alliance of Wisconsin (The Alliance) you must pay $25 a year. You do not need to be a member to attend our meetings, but if you are a member these events are free (you do not have to pay the $5). By becoming a member of The Alliance you also are welcome to use our name and (future) logo on your resume.

4. We will be having 2 special education days in 2012. The first will be April 28^th for “The Week of the Young Child” and the other will be “Nannies across America” for National Nanny Recognition Week on Sept 29^th. Both these events will provide several educational workshops. They will therefore cost a little more than our standard educational events. That cost is TBA but if you become a member you will receive a 50% discount for them.

5. In November we will also be offering a CPR and First Aid course. The cost of that will be the same for everyone.

6. Get connected with our blog because we are going to be providing you with some additional education and support through it. Several of our long time members are going to be writing articles each month. I am excited about the wealth of knowledge we will all receive from the blog in the near future.

7. We want YOU to be involved in this group. We know that as a busy nanny you are not always able to make it to our scheduled events. I hope you all know that should not stop you from connecting with each other. Use our Facebook group, blog and face to face events to meet new nannies and set up your own social gatherings. It could be on your own or with your charges. If you are planning an outing with the kids and want to meet up with others, let us know!! If you want to set up a play date with a group of people, go for it.

I would like to give one more giant THANK YOU to Mary Boyle for her tireless work on behalf of nannies for the last 5+ years. She has done more for us that any of us realize, sacrificing time, energy and very often money to support us. It is a great honor to be taking over for her and I will do my best to fill her shoes. She will always be available for you because that is just who she is however, please direct your Nanny Alliance questions to me from this point further.

Farewell from the Founder

Hello, Everyone!

I cannot believe how fast this past year has gone by! Between homeschooling two kids, trying to run a placement agency and a nanny group and trying to be a writer, I've been one busy girl! So busy, in fact, that I've had to make a very hard decision. For those of you who missed the last get-together at Fiddleheads, my big announcement was that I will no longer be running the Alliance and I will be closing Northshore Professional Nanny Agency at the end of the year.

Between the economy and the rise of online agencies, NPNA has just not been productive these past two years and I no longer have the time and energy to put any more into it. Though it is hard to let it all go, in my heart of hearts I know it's time to move on to something new. Also, I think the Alliance will be able to go further without being associated with a placement agency - which brings me to the good news:

Our very own Marcia Hall has agreed to take over the Alliance for me, so you will all be in very capable hands. Marcia is a Certified Professional Nanny from the English Nanny & Governess School, the 2011 INA Nanny of the Year and an INA Board Member, Parent Coach and owner of Strong Roots Family Coaching, among other things. I don't think there's a more qualified person in the whole of Wisconsin to run the group than Marcia!

Because the Alliance is no longer attached to an agency, it's name will change to The Nanny Alliance of Wisconsin - a great name for a new year and a new beginning.

I am so thankful for all of the great nannies and people I've met through the Alliance - we should all be proud of what we have accomplished as a group these past 5 years (yes, it has been that long!). I know that Marcia will have the time and energy to take this group forward in a way I've always wanted to, but could never quite manage, and that you will continue to do great things together and grow and support each other as professionals.

Although Marcia will not run a placement agency, she will continue to offer the nanny and family consultations should you need them. A nanny consultation is only $25 and will assist you greatly in constructing your profile, interviewing safely, understanding nanny taxes and insurance and using a work agreement with your family. Marcia will also continue to offer plenty of social and educational events to all of the nannies in WI, so look for that and get involved!

Thank you all for your well-wishes and kind words as I embark on my new journey, but no matter where I go from here, I will always consider myself a professional nanny and be proud of it!

Nannypalooza – Eureka!!!

A wrap-up on the Nannypalooza Conference by INA Nanny of the Year, Marcia Hall

Nannypalooza is an annual conference that works to support nannies in all areas of their lives. It is a great place to learn, share and grow. Check out the web site here.

This year’s Nannypalooza was held near Baltimore, Maryland in the quaint town of Ellicott City. The event was relaxing, fun and incredibly educational. It offered 15 different workshops all geared for Nannies. My personal favorites were “Why Do They Do That?”, “What Triggered That Meltdown?”, “Win, Win Negotiating” and “Learning all about Learning Styles.” Each workshop was full of helpful tools and information that I am now able to bring back and put into practice with my family.

“Why Do They Do That” was about brain development - primarily focused on the most vital thing every human brain needs to develop: interaction with at least one other human. Without this essential connection with other brains, the baby brain CANNOT make the neurological links it needs to.

“What Triggered That Meltdown?” was about the specific needs of highly sensitive children. It provided amazing ideas on calming and soothing children with hyper and hypo-sensitivity issues. I found it informative even though I do not have children diagnosed with sensitivity issues. The strategies would be useful for any child over-stimulated and over-whelmed.

"Win, Win Negotiating" was all about learning techniques that will help when an argument or frustration occurs between nanny and employer. The techniques include words to use to defuse the situation and what to say to get your point across without sounding threatening or judgmental.

"Learning all about Learning Styles" helped the participants pinpoint their own learning styles and those of our charges. It also gave us suggestions to help children with a specific learning style understand concepts presented in a different structure. For example if you work with a child that is a visual learner, using pictures and images to teach will be more effective than simply asking them to read a textbook.

· Creative Tools to Teach Kids about Healthy Food

These workshops were amazing and there was something for every nanny to enjoy and learn from; however, getting to learn from and about nannies from all over the country was a reward in itself. I highly recommend every professional nanny seriously consider attending a conference at least once in their career. Once you attend one, you will understand the true value of it and you will be hooked.

Nannypalooza will most likely happen again next year but you don’t have to wait to go to a nanny conference. International Nanny Associations annual conference is just 6 months away. Writing A Great Résumé

It's a tough economy, even in the nanny world. If you're looking for a new position, Northshore Professional Nanny Agency is always looking for great candidates! Although I would love to be the one to place all of you, I recognize that there are several routes to go about getting a new position: brick and mortar agencies, online agencies and word of mouth/networking being the most common. However you proceed, you will need to start out with one indispensable piece of paper: your résumé.

I recently read a great article by Kerry Hannon who interviewed Tony Beshara, author of Unbeatable Résumés, on how to write, well, a great résumé, of course, which I thought would be very helpful to the nanny populace. I will paraphrase the best information here along with an added bit of my own:

A good résumé is simple and no more than 2 pages
Avoid fancy fonts and layouts; stick to Times New Roman in black on white paper in 9 or 12 size type. Be consistent and avoid using too much underlining, bold or italics. Putting your name and who you've worked for in larger type is okay.
It is best to create your document in Word so that it can be opened on any computer. I strongly recommend sending pdf's only, which can be created in newer versions of Word. Be sure to save the document in both formats so you can make changes easily if necessary.
Start with your most recent position and work back, listing the month and year you started and ended and your accomplishments. You do not need full sentences; you can start with a verb (Transported children to and from school and activities, for instance).
Take out the objectives and summaries - they are no longer in vogue; however; with a nanny position, I do recommend writing a personal, open letter to prospective families telling about yourself, why you enjoy being a nanny and what your idea of a nanny position entails. This letter does not need to contain too much personal information - just stick to the topic of being a nanny - and may be on a separate sheet of paper or in a brief paragraph at the top of the résumé.
Avoid overly-used key words and phrases such as 'excellent communication skills.'
For most job applications, you should avoid submitting a photo; however, in the nanny world, this is not always true. Many online nanny sites encourage/insist you use a photo of yourself. A brick and mortar agency, however, should not request a photo but should be meeting you in person. Your recommendation to a family should be made on your experience, qualifications and personality - not on how you look.

Keep in mind that a well-written résumé will only help you get an interview. It is your performance at the interview that gets you the job. NPNA insists on a 3 step interviewing process beginning with a phone interview, then on to an in-person interview in a public place and, finally, an in-home interview with the family. NEVER go to a family's home for the first interview unless the agency you are working with has met with the family in advance. NEVER agree to accept a position with a family without having interviewed extensively and NEVER send a family or an agency any money in order to interview or secure your position. With that in mind, here are a few more tips:

Show up on time. No excuses.
Be put-together - no heavy makeup, perfume, long/elaborate fingernails and wearing modest and sensible attire (this is not the place for mini-skirts, high-heels or low-cut tops). You should appear as if you're ready to be active with children.
Be a good communicator: make eye-contact, smile, speak clearly and ask plenty of questions.
Be a confident professional, without being demanding and without a sense of entitlement. Understand your obligations as a household employee, as well as your employer's (in case they don't!).
NEVER accept a position with a family who refuses to pay you legally or who refuses to work with an employment agreement!

2nd Annual Nannypalooza Milwaukee Recap

The 2nd Annual Nannypalooza Milwaukee at the Urban Ecology Center this past Saturday, September 17th was an unqualified success! We gathered a great donation for Kids Matter, Inc. and experienced an incredible day of professional nanny development and camaraderie - thank you to all who participated!!

A very special thank you to our 5 amazing speakers: Deborah McNelis, creator/owner of Braininsights, who gave an amazing presentation on early brain development; Stephanie Theirl, childbirth educator and owner of Transformative Birth, who taught us how to reduce our (and our children's) exposure to toxic chemicals; Scott Theirl, DC, DACNB, FACFN, a board certified chiropractic neurologist and owner of Functional Restoration in Glendale, who taught us early warning signs to look for in young children; Marcia Hall, CPN (Certified Professional Nanny), INA (International Nanny Association) Nanny of the Year, Family Coach and the owner of Strong Roots Family Parenting who taught us how to decode children's behavior and respond appropriately and Angela Vogds, professional nanny, postpartum doula, newborn care specialist and the owner of Nurturing Newborn Care Solutions, who taught us the Happiest Baby on the Block principles.

Drowning Doesn't Look Like Drowning

Did you know that drowning is the second most common cause of accidental death in children ages 1-14 (second to motor vehicle accidents)? It's true - and not only that, 90 percent of the drownings occur while under the care of an adult or teenager. The reason why is because drowning doesn't look like drowning.

While enjoying all the summer fun in the water that Wisconsin has to offer, be on the lookout for these 8 quiet signs of trouble:

Children in water need constant supervision

A drowning person can't call for help - they're having too much trouble breathing. Their mouth sinks below and reappears above the surface of the water.
A drowning person cannot wave for help - they instinctively extend their arms to the sides and press down to lift their mouth out of the water; a child may extend their arms forward. They cannot use their arms to move toward a rescuer or reach for rescue equipment.
A drowning person remains upright in the water, with no evidence of kicking. They can struggle for only 20-6- seconds before going under.
A drowning person's eyes are glassy and unable to focus, or closed.
Their hair may be over their forehead or eyes.
The head is low in the water, with mouth at water level; head may be tilted back with mouth open or a child's head may fall forward.
A drowning person doesn't look like they're drowning - they may seem to be looking up at the sky, shore, pool deck or dock. Ask them, "Are you alright?" If they answer, they're probably fine; if they return a blank stare, you may have less than 30 seconds to reach them.
Children playing in the water make noise - if they are quiet, you need to find out why immediately!

Prepare Your Child for Potty Training

Preparing your child for the transition from diapers to underwear can start at a very young age. Even a child under the age of one is beginning to understand the world around him. In fact, even a six month old wants to do the things you do. Use this to your advantage and model the positive behaviors you want your child to mimic. Remember, if your goal is to get your child to eat his food with a fork, you'll need to show him that you eat your food with a fork and praise him as he tries to do the same.

The technique of modeling and imitating is not only successful with teaching appropriate mealtime manners; it's a wonderful tool that can be used during toilet training. To some parents, taking their child with them to the bathroom may sound crude and raise feelings of discomfort, but the reality is that your child needs to see you using the toilet to understand that doing it is a normal and expected event. If you lock yourself in the bathroom every time you go, your child will never have a chance to witness this natural experience. In fact, if you only use the toilet behind closed doors, your child may even grow to think that something mysterious and strange goes on in the bathroom, which can create and breed fear. By treating using the toilet like any other habit, you show your child that using it is just one more thing he will learn to do on his own.

It is often said that boys potty train later than girls. If we stop and think about this, is it because mothers tend to do most of the training and boys are not exposed to seeing their father's use the toilet regularly? I think this could be the case. That's why it is important for your child to witness the same gender using the potty. If your little boy never sees another older male use the potty standing up, it will make the process of teaching him to urinate standing up much more difficult.

Your bathroom vocabulary is another important part of the potty training process. Using language that your child can understand and even repeat at young ages is key to developing your potty training language. Though it may be embarrassing for you when your child says he has to go poop in grocery store, most people will understand and laugh with you, not at you. Decide what words you will use and be consistent with using them. “Tinkle”, “poop” and “toilet” are popular, recognizable words that many parents use. Using the word potty when your child goes in his diaper and the word toilet when he goes on the toilet can also help build your child's potty training understanding. Saying, "you went potty” when your child just soiled his diaper can be confusing if you also use this language when he goes on the toilet. Using different words and phrases will help separate the two experiences. If your child is in daycare, you'll also want to be sure to communicate your potty training vocabulary with his caregiver so that she can support your child during this process as well as understand what he's trying to communicate when he has to go.

When potty training, your words and tone truly affect your child and the potty training outcome. Avoid using harsh or shaming words and tones when changing his diapers, but instead use positive words paired with a positive tone to set an encouraging atmosphere. While it can be tempting to comment on how gross a diaper smells, doing so could translate to your child that he's done something wrong which could result in feelings of shame and embarrassment. However, telling your child what you see in his diaper can be helpful. “Oh, you went tinkle in your diaper” or “You went poop” can help facilitate the understanding of natural bodily functions.

The next step in preparing your child for potty training involves effective communication. As your child begins to be interested in your toileting experience, you can start telling him that someday he will go poop and tinkle on the potty too. Articulating these goals is an important step that will help mentally prepare your child to use the toilet. Be sure to let your child know that he will use the toilet when he is ready. Say it often and say it in many different ways.

Your child was born into this world able to do nothing for himself. The way he learns to do anything is through observation and experience. That is why the next part of your potty training journey is to encourage your child to sit on the toilet. Sometime after his first birthday, invite him to sit on it with you. It is important that if he doesn't want to, you do not force him. While he may not want to sit on the toilet the first few times you ask, don’t stop extending the invitation. You may find that your child is really excited about it the first time you ask, and then is scared to do it few days later. Don’t worry; this is normal. Keep at it by being encouraging and staying positive.

Another consideration is that generally children love to flush the toilet, so much so that it can be a motivating factor in your child's decision to sit on it. It is a good idea to let your child experiment with flushing it. However it can scare a child if you flush the toilet when he is on it. This can be particularly scary during the introductory period of potty training. It could make your child not want to go near a toilet for weeks or more. Be cautious of this when at a public restroom with an auto flush. In addition to being loud, they often spray up water that can be frightening to young children.

Strategically timing when you ask your child to sit on the toilet may be helpful. Children tend to urinate just after drinking a lot of liquid. If your child has never had the sensation of urinating on the toilet, you could try giving him something to drink just before or while on the toilet. It is important for your child to have this experience at some point before his transition to underpants.

One last training tip is to let your child experience using the toilet outside of your home. This is important because your child will need to be comfortable going in many places. If the only place he ever experiments with is home, the move to underwear will be more challenging and worrisome for both him and you.

I guess the third time really is a charm! Having been nominated for the third time for the International Nanny Association Nanny of the Year award, our very own Marcia Hall - Certified Professional Nanny, Family Coach and owner of Strong Roots Family Coaching - has brought home the trophy, at last.

Marcia received her award this past weekend at the annual INA Conference in Tampa, Florida. Marcia will be on hand to give us a recap of the Conference this Saturday, May 21st from 10:30-12:20 at Fiddleheads Cafe in Mequon on Port Washington Rd., where we will celebrate her accomplishment!

Week of the Young Child

April 10th through the 16th is Week of the Young Child - an annual event sponsored by the NAEYC (National Assoc. for the Education of Young Children). Now in it's 40th year, the celebration's purpose is to focus public attention of the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. This year's theme is Early Years are Learning Years. As usual, The Alliance will be collecting books for Next Door Foundation in Milwaukee for their Books for Kids project. Please bring in any new or gently used books for young children you've collected to our next get together on Saturday, April 30th from 10:30-12:30 in the Community Room at the North Shore Library. The Truth About Self-Esteem & Self Worth with Marcia Hall

On Saturday, February 26th at the North Shore Library, Mrs. Marcia Hall, CPN, Parent Coach and Owner of Strong Roots Family Coaching, gave Alliance members a free workshop about self-esteem and self worth. Marcia is a great presenter and the information was well worth the $10/person fee that she would normally have charged.

Marcia started out by defining the words. Self-worth means how we believe we deserve to be treated, while self-esteem means our confidence in ourselves.

The best way to build self-worth in a child is to spend quality time with them. Each child needs a minimum of 15 minutes a day; however, some children need more time than this and each child is unique in the way they want to 'connect.' This 15 minutes needs to be uninterrupted - no t.v, phones or computers or even conversations with other children or your spouse. Every child needs this time with both parents.

We've all heard the words "quality time" but what children really need is high quality time. Marcia said, "Quality time is taking your child to the park and watching him play while talking to him. High-quality time is getting on the play equipment with him and playing, too."

Self-esteem is built by letting children do things for themselves. This is very important because many people think that self-esteem can be built by praise, but this is untrue. Marcia said, "Children have a natural drive to learn to do things on their own but that this drive is often crushed in their early years because parents and caregivers are afraid they will not do it 'right,' will hurt themselves or that they will make a mess."

As caregivers, it is essential that we allow children to try without judgement or criticism so that they learn to be proud of themselves for their own accomplishments instead of waiting for the approval of others.

Marcia has several workshops coming up and I strongly encourage participation. Marcia's parenting blog is also a valuable resource to parents, as well as caregivers.

Ironically, my favorite blogger, Teacher Tom, wrote a post on this same topic just before the workshop. His words sum it up nicely:

"...self-esteem is not built though hollow praise, but rather from mastering skills, which can only be done through experience and hard work. We help our children build confidence by giving them the opportunities to try, try, try again. Encouragement, not praise is our greatest tool."

Our First Get-Together of the New Year!

Saturday, January 28th from our very own Newborn Care Specialist, Angela Vogds, led a discussion on the book Super Baby by Jenn Berman.

One of the aspects of the book that most interested me was a section written by Lindsay Heller, PsyD, who is a licensed clinical psychologist and former nanny who is also known as "The Nanny Doctor." Dr. Heller wrote:

Eleven Things Your Nanny Wishes You Would Do

Respect the schedule Once you have a regular set schedule, make your best attempt to respect it. Of course, with children you need to be flexible, but be careful of taking advantage of this flexibility - it may just cost you your nanny.
Talk to your nanny Communication is key. Set up a regular time to touch base about the kids and job details. Sometimes employers assume the nanny should just know everything. However, she is not a mind reader and needs you to inform her how things are done, especially in the beginning.
Allow your nanny some break time on vacation When you are on vacation and your nanny travels with you, she is not on vacation. Utilize the hotel babysitting service for a day or two or give your nanny a night off (or two). She deserves some respite as much as you do, and she'll be a better nanny for it.
Pay your nanny on time and hassle-free Counting hours and trying to track you down can be tough. Having a discussion about money can be even tougher. Set up a regular system for paying your nanny.
Do not blame your nanny for your private troubles Your nanny understands that she works in your private home, embedded in your private life. Try not to take it out on her. She doesn't deserve it and if it happens enough, you may drive a good nanny away.
Give your nanny respect Your nanny is a professional caring for your child. Ask her opinion. Listen to her guidance. She has done this before and may have a lot of wisdom to share.
Encourage your nanny to connect you to your child Your nanny can help you stay connected with your baby. She can take pictures of your child, log her daily activities and update you on anything new that happened during the day.
Avoid changing your mind When you change your mind at the last minute, it slows things down and you need to be patient and understanding to get things back on track.
Show appreciation Your nanny needs to know she is doing a good job and will do an even better job if she knows you appreciate her.
Collaborate Your nanny is doing the best job she knows how, but she needs your help.
Don't change the job requirements without warning If the job description is changing, take care to sit down and discuss the changes and your family's specific needs with your nanny.

The list offers some of the common pitfalls of being a nanny and makes parents aware of it, which is great. The book also gives a lot of great, early years advice from tips for encouraging language to twelve ways to give your baby a head start in the first three years - I think it's worth a read!

My favorite Halloween activity is the carving of pumpkins. In fact, I can't remember a time in my life when I haven't carved a pumpkin on Halloween. Those special, kid-safe carving knives really do work - in fact, I prefer them to real ones, myself. This year, my 7 1/2 year old carved her own pumpkin for the first time:-)

Here are my pumpkin-carving tips for carving with kids:

Start by cutting the 'hat.' Be sure to cut in at an angle so it doesn't fall through the hole!
Get out all of the 'guts' - be sure to separate the seeds for a snack for later!
Mark the face by using at tac, a toothpick or a special 'marker' that comes with a carving kit. You will be able to see the pinpricks and 'connect the dots' while you carve.
Carve away! Be creative and let the kids do as much as they can without interfering.
Spill the pumpkin seeds, un-rinsed, on a shallow pan lined with parchment paper, sprinkle with salt and bake at 350 - checking at 15 minutes and every 5 thereafter. The more seeds you have, the longer it takes.
Allow seeds to cool (notice the neat crackling sounds they make!) and eat - but be careful not to eat too many - they can be rough on the tummy:-)

Nannypalooza Milwaukee!!

Nannypalooza is a yearly professional conference put on by the NANC (National Assoc. for Nanny Care) and, in the past, has been one national event in one location. This year, due to the economy, the NANC asked agencies and support groups to host local Nannypalooza events in their own towns, dubbed Nannies Across America, and Northshore Professional Nanny Agency and Alliance had the honor of hosting Nannypalooza Milwaukee!! The event, held at the Schlitz Audubon Nature Center on Saturday, September 18th, was a huge success! Twenty-five people attended. There were 5 excellent speakers: Patti Bailie, SANC Preschool Director; Dr. Amy Leventhal, Ph. D.; Heidi Lukinac, RYT; Marcia Hall, CPN & Parenting Coach and Angela Vogds, Nanny, Doula and Newborn Care Specialist. There was a delicious lunch sponsored by Child Care Network and Nanny Connections. Every participant walked away with at least 2 fabulous raffle prizes and an incredible assortment of National Nanny Recognition Week gifts, including coupons to area stores and a free bowling party for 6 at IPic Entertainment. After the conference, many attendees met for dinner at IPic Entertainment to finish up the evening with more discussion and socializing. All in all, it was a great day! Thank you to everyone who helped and participated in this fabulous event!! I hope we have the opportunity to do it again next year!!

The Alliance Celebrates Week of the Young Child

NAEYC - the National Association for the Education of Young Children - hosts Week of the Young Child every year in April. This year it is April 11-17th. Nanny Support Groups across the nation are doing volunteer/charity work to benefit children on this week and The Alliance will be doing the same.

This year, we will be doing a book drive for Next Door Foundation, an organization that brings books and stories to inner-city children who are rarely read to or own any books. Please round up gently used books - or purchase new ones! - to donate. Board books and books with African American characters are especially in demand.

Join us on Saturday, April 10th from 2-4PM at Fiddleheads Cafe in Mequon for a book collection and a workshop entitled Becoming a Better Nanny. NPNA owner, Mary Boyle, will be speaking about Communication, Work Agreements, Taxes, Salary, Benefits and What Makes a Professional Nanny. This workshop will be beneficial to those considering entering the in-home childcare profession, as well as to the veteran nanny. Seating is limited. Please rsvp to northshorenanny@gmail.com.

We are also looking for volunteers to participate in the Read to Me program on Tuesday, April 13th at 1:30. This is an incredible experience and I highly recommend it! When your child does something wrong, consider why. If he slides paperclips into the DVD player, try to figure out why. When you do, you’ll realize that he’s watched you slide things into the player, so he’s mimicking your actions. By asking “why,” you see that he’s not misbehaving, he’s being curious about the world. The “discipline” involved is a lesson about how DVD players work.

Here we are - in fabulous hats - to enjoy the Kentucky Derby at IPIC at Bayshore Mall on Saturday, May 2nd. It was a blast! We enjoyed a delicious lunch, Kentucky Tea and Mint Juleps and IPIC's own version of the Derby (Bayshore employees racing on stick horses!) at 'Bayshore Downs' outside around the fountain. We watched the actual Derby inside on the big screens and won fabulous prizes - even though the horse I picked didn't even place! If it happens again next year, we'll be there - I hope you'll join us!

Next Door Foundation

The Alliance has chosen Next Door Foundation for our Charity Focus in 2009. NDF is in need of both new and gently used children's books and volunteers for their Read to Me program. Alliance members will collect children's books at every meeting during the year, so please set aside those extra copies of Dr. Suess and Goodnight Moon to donate!

Read to Me is on Tuesdays from 1-3:30 and Wednesdays from 9-11:30. If you cannot commit to the whole time, that is okay. Books will be provided, or you can bring your favorites. Readers read to small groups of children, ages 3-5, in half hour increments. Being a reader is extremely rewarding and a great way to make a difference in our community!

National Nanny Recognition Week

National Nanny Recognition Week (NNRW) was September 21st -27th. The first NNRW was celebrated in 1998; started by Mary Cluman, the owner and editor of Nanny News. Shortly after, the event was adopted by NAN (National Association for Nannies), which has since become the APN (Association of Professional Nannies). This year, our group celebrated NNRW by doing some volunteer work for Next Door Foundation (Http://www.nextdoormil.org). Three of our members volunteered as readers for NDF's Read With Me program, and with help from local bookstore Harry W. Schwartz and our members, we collected a fair amount of books for the NDF book drive. Thank you to all who participated!
